BMI Calculator
Check your Body Mass Index using the lower cut-offs recommended for Indians, and find the healthy weight range for your height.
Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs: normal 18.5–22.9, overweight 23–24.9, obese 25 and above, because health risks rise at a lower BMI in South Asians.
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes, pregnant women, children and older adults should consult a doctor.
How to use BMI Calculator
- Choose metric or imperial units.
- Enter your height and weight.
- Pick the Asian Indian or WHO classification and read your BMI.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal BMI for Indians?
For Asian Indians, a BMI of 18.5–22.9 is normal, 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese. These cut-offs are lower than the WHO international ones.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres)². For 68 kg and 1.70 m, BMI = 68 ÷ 2.89 = 23.5.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a quick screening tool. It does not measure body fat directly, so muscular people may show a high BMI. Waist size is also a useful indicator.
