Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

Yes. If your taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, the 87A rebate cancels the tax. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Marginal relief applies just above ₹12 lakh.

Which is better: old or new tax regime?

The new regime is better for most people unless they claim large deductions. As a rough guide, the old regime wins only if your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest, etc.) are well above ₹4–5 lakh at higher incomes. This calculator shows the exact difference.

Are the tax slabs different for FY 2026-27?

No. Budget 2026 kept the slab rates, standard deduction and rebate the same as FY 2025-26.

Can salaried employees switch regimes every year?

Yes. Salaried individuals without business income can choose either regime every year when filing their return. People with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
