Frequently asked questions
What is the PPF interest rate now?
The PPF rate is 7.1% a year for October–December 2026. The government reviews it every quarter. Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited once a year.
How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh in PPF every year for 15 years?
At 7.1%, depositing ₹1.5 lakh at the start of every year for 15 years gives about ₹40.68 lakh at maturity, of which ₹22.5 lakh is your investment and about ₹18.18 lakh is tax-free interest.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF has EEE status: deposits qualify for deduction under section 80C (old regime), and both interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
Why deposit before the 5th of the month?
Interest for a month is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day. Depositing by the 5th (ideally 5 April for the yearly deposit) earns interest for that month.
