Frequently asked questions

Does the online compass work on a laptop?

Usually not. Most laptops and desktops have no compass sensor. Open the page on an Android phone or iPhone instead.

Why is the compass wrong or jumping around?

Magnets, metal, phone cases with magnets, speakers and electrical wiring disturb the sensor. Move away from them and calibrate by moving the phone in a figure-8 a few times.

Does it show true north or magnetic north?

Magnetic north, like a normal compass. In India the difference from true north is under 2°, which is negligible for everyday use.

Can I use it to check the Vastu direction of a house?

Yes. Stand at the centre of the house or at the main door, hold the phone flat and read the facing direction. Take readings in a few spots, away from steel doors and appliances.

How is the Qibla direction calculated?

From your location, the tool calculates the great-circle direction to the Kaaba in Makkah and marks it on the dial in green.
